Taupo

Hi again,

Last weekend was Queen’s Birthday weekend, and I decided to go South, to Rotorua and Taupo. The Queen of England doesn’t actually have her birthday this weekend, but at least on the Northern Hemisphere it should be nice weather this time of the year. Not that the weather over here was bad, but it was quite cold outside.

Saturday afternoon we arrived in Taupo, The thing about travelling in the winter is, it’s dark so much earlier than in the summer. Sunset is just after 5pm, and a lot of places will close at 5. But we still had some time to visit the Craters of the Moon before the sun set for the evening.

‘We’, you ask? Yes, this time I wasn’t alone…

Somehow it always reminds me a bit of Jurassic Age. The steam venting from the ground and all the other geothermal activity. I can almost see the dinosaurs walking by…

One of my favourite things to do around here is going to hot pools. On Sunday morning we went to the DeBretts hot pools, with a large warm mineral pool, private spa pools and, of course, a hydroslide.

Then we went to the lake front for our picnic. And to take pictures of course.

The weather was clear enough to have a nice view on Tongariro National Park, with its three volcanoes. You can see the snow on Mount Ruapehu, and the steam venting from Mount Tongariro.

After Picnicking we start going towards Rotorua. Along the way we stop at Orakei Korako, where in the middle of the forest at Lake Ohakuri a series of silica terraces rises from the water.

Then it was time to return to planet Earth and continue our journey in Rotorua. But there is always time for one last picture.

Together

See you tomorrow,
Roeland
